Baughman Overcomes Tough Pill Draws in ASCS Regional Action

8/28/2013

Inside Line Promotions - MESQUITE, Texas (Aug. 27, 2013) - Josh Baughman overcame a tough weekend of drawing with the ASCS Gulf South and ASCS Lone Star Regions last weekend.

"We didn't draw very well," he said. "There were 36 pills in the jar at Waco and we drew a 34."

That started Baughman eighth in his heat race on Friday at Heart O'Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas. He finished where he started, which relegated him to a B Main.

"The track still had a lot of moisture in it when we went out," he said of his heat race. "By the time we went out for the B Main the track started slicking off. We led about half of the B Main and I went to the top to try it out before the feature. I got passed on the bottom and ended up second."

After earning a transfer, Baughman started the main event on the outside of the ninth row and he ended up placing 17th on the challenging track.

"We changed up some things and went out for the main," he said. "It was slick, slick, slick. There wasn't hardly any passing going on. I couldn't get any forward drive out of the car."

The team made a major overhaul before tackling Devil's Bowl Speedway on Saturday, when Baughman once again started eighth in his heat race.

"Saturday we pretty much rebuilt the car and changed some things that seemed to help out a lot," he said. "Usually Devil's Bowl has a lot of moisture in it. You get what you can on the start and go from there. We were faster than the cars in front of us, but it was too locked down to pass."

Baughman picked up a trio of positions to end fifth in his heat race, which gave him enough points to lock into the feature.

"The track went away quite a bit, which I was hoping for," he said. "We're a lot better in the slick. It slicked off probably the first 15 to 18 laps and then it rubbered up. Once it rubbered up we found the rubber a lap sooner than they did and got a couple of cars out of it."

Baughman rallied to finish eighth, which marked his sixth top-10 result of the season.

"I was happy to get a top 10 out of it because we've had DNFs every time we've been there," he said.

Baughman is slated to compete with the ASCS Lone Star Region on Saturday at Abilene Speedway in Abilene, Texas, and on Sunday at Lubbock Speedway in Lubbock, Texas.

"It's the closest I've raced all year," said Baughman, who lives in Odessa, Texas. "I'm excited to go back to the roots of where I started my racing."
