Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 27, 2016) – Josh Baughman had one of the fastest cars throughout the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend.

Baughman kicked off the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader at Lucas Oil Speedway last Thursday by placing third in a heat race before he advanced from ninth to fifth place in a qualifier. That locked him into the 14th starting position for the 25-lap main event.

“We had a great car,” he said. “We were passing for fifth when I junked it. I got up over the curb coming out of turn four. I got my right front in it and that’s all it took.”

Baughman got upside down in the closing laps while competing for a top five. He was unable to resume action and was credited with a 21st-place finish.

The team repaired the damage for Friday’s show, which began with a tough pill draw. Baughman finished where he started – sixth – in a heat race before he maneuvered from 10th to fifth in a B Main to narrowly miss transferring into the main event.

“The pill draw bit us,” he said. “It was a narrow track so you’re in trouble at that point.”

The event wrapped up on Saturday with Baughman winning his heat race and a qualifier to rank second in points. That lined him up 10th – after the eight locked in drivers – for the $10,000-to-win main event.

“We knew what we had to do coming into Saturday night,” he said. “Being able to start 10th and go forward is a great night. I felt like we had a podium car. The track was tricky. It was rough and cowboy up. We were up to fourth passing for third and I jumped the cushion.”

Baughman was contending for a podium before the late-race miscue. He held fifth place on the final lap before being passed for the position exiting turn four as the checkered flag was waved.

“It was a tough weekend the way the format was set up and with so many cars,” he said. “I felt like later when the track got racy we had a car to beat. To end up sixth out of 60-plus drivers was a good result.”

Baughman is slated to race this Saturday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., for the Midwest Fall Brawl V with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
