Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Sept. 14, 2017) – Josh Baughman made a huge leap forward between the two Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions nights at Port Royal Speedway last weekend during the Tuscarora 50.

Baughman kicked off the event on Friday by qualifying fifth quickest in his group, which missed the heat race inversion by only one spot and a total of less than three hundredths of a second. He then finished where he started – fifth – in a heat race. That relegated him to the 13th starting position in the B Main.

“That heat race inversion is just about everything,” he said. “If we hit that and start on the front row of the heat race than we just have to maintain to lock into the dash, which would have started us in the first few rows of the main event. By missing the inversion we had to advance several spots in the heat race just to make the main event. And when you start that far back in the B Main it’s just about impossible to make the show.”

Baughman placed 13th in the consolation race, but he returned to the half-mile oval on Saturday for the $50,000-to-win finale on point.

“We were a lot stronger in qualifying,” he said. “Unfortunately, we qualified just a bit too well and didn’t hit the heat race inversion right.”

Baughman qualified fourth quickest out of more than 30 competitors in his group. That lined him up third in a heat race. He finished fifth to miss locking into the main event by two positions. That relegated him to the B Main, in which he advanced from seventh to fifth place to miss transferring into the A Main by only one spot.

“That’s tough to be that close to making one of the biggest events of the year, but it’s motivation for our team,” he said. “We made progress from Night 1 to Night 2 so I’m looking forward to seeing how we keep improving our 410 program.”

Baughman is scheduled to compete this Friday at Clay County Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, and Saturday at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., with the IRA Series.
